My interest in the Barritts/Barretts of Foulridge stems from the marriage of my ancestor Matthew Cragg to Margaret Barritt at St. Mary le Ghyll in Barnoldswick. Margaret died young having had two daughters, Ann and Betty and two sons, Richard and Stephen. Richard was Steven Broadley’s ancestor and Stephen was my ancestor.
Matthew Cragg of Barnoldswick, cordwainer, and Margaret Barritt, of the parish aforesaid, spinster, by banns, on 4 October 1788 by T Parkinson. Both signed in presence of Robt. Barritt, Benj. Barritt, Jane Barritt and Wm. Ralph. The Banns Book shows that they were read on 24 Aug. 14 Sept. and 21 Sept. 1788.
Steven Broadley has assembled convincing evidence that Margaret was baptised at Colne Parish Church on 12 March 1769, the daughter of Robert Barritt and Betty Wilson of Hey in Foulridge. Robert and Betty were married at Colne Parish Church on 3 July 1764. The Barritts were a well known Foulridge family. There seems to be a connection between the Barritts and Matthew's son, Richard Cragg who farmed land owned by them. The final proof of the connection comes from the will of Robert Barritt, a hatter, in 1812, where he leaves a hundred pounds to his granddaughter, Betty Cragg, the daughter of Matthew Cragg.
Steven Broadley has assembled the following information which shows the correct identification of the Margaret Barritt who married Matthew Cragg.
1. Margaret Cragg’s age of 31 at her death in 1801 ties in with the baptism date found of 1769. In addition she was buried at Colne. A number of Barritts of Hey in Foulridge are buried in Colne.
2. The name of one of her grandsons was Barrett or Barritt.
3. Richard Cragg, son of Matthew (the younger) lived at one time at Wood End Farm which was owned by the Barritts of Foulridge. Richard Cragg was also in charge of farms in Foulridge which were owned by John Barritt of Foulridge (1840 Tithe Map) Cragg Nook, Far Heys, Heys and Meadow.
4. Richard Cragg named a son Robert which would be after his maternal grandfather if Margaret was daughter of Robert (and Betty) Barritt.
5. Matthew and Margaret named their two daughters Ann and Betty which could be consistent with naming them after their paternal and maternal grandmothers respectively.
6. In 1996 the will of Robert Barritt was obtained. In it he left money to Betty Cragg the daughter of Matthew Cragg.
Marriage of Robert Barritt of Colne and Betty Wilson of Colne on 3 July 1764, witn: Richard Farrar and John Tillotson.
Baptisms of children of Robert Barritt and Betty Wilson of "The Hey" Foulridge at Colne Parish Church.
John Barrett, 8 March 1767, son of Robert and Betty of Hey
Margaret Barrett, 12 March 1769, dau of Robert an Betty of The Hey.
James Barrett, 28 June 1772, son of Robert and Betty of The Hey, Foulridge.
William Barrett, 25 Sept 1774, son of Robert and Betty of Hey
Joseph Barrett, 15 Aug 1779, son of Robert and Betty of Hay
The burials of Robert and Betty Barritt have been found at Colne and this led to the discovery of Robert Barritt's will, made in 1812. He was a hatter of Woodend in the parish of Barnoldswick and owned property at Cragg End in Foulridge and Long Ing in Salterforth. In the will he named his sons John, William and Joseph, a nephew Robert Barritt and his late son James who had some illegitimate children.. His daughter Margaret had died about 11 years before the will was made but he left a hundred pounds to his granddaughter Betty Cragg when she reached the age of 21. The terms of the will indicate that both John and William had children at the time it was written.
Betty Barritt, on 5 December 1810, of old age, aged 67, relation of Robert Barritt of Woodend, hatter. (presumably Robert was the widower)
Robert Barritt, on 19 May 1812, of decline, aged 70, a hatter of Woodend.
James Barrett, on 14 September 1809, decline, aged 38, a hatter of Woodend.
These records put Robert's birth between May 1741 and May 1742, while Betty was born between December 1742 and December 1743. The James Barritt who died in 1809 fits with the James born in 1772 as shown above. We know from Robert’s will that James was dead by 1812.
The birth of Robert needs to be earlier than about 1748 as he married in 1764. There are two Robert Barritts baptised in Colne in this period; one in 1734 and one in 1742. The latter is a good fit given the age of Robert at death. This Robert is part of the family of a John Barritt of Hey (Hay) in Foulridge, all baptised at Colne Parish Church.
Robert Barritt, 30 Dec 1742, son of John of Hey, Foulridge.
William Barritt, 24 June 1744, son of John of Hey (buried 26 Aug 1831 aged 88)
James Barritt, 15 February 1746, son of John of Hey (buried 12 April 1746)
Benjamin Barritt, 15 August 1747, son of John of Hey (buried 12 May 1812?)
Note that a Robert Barritt of Woodend, yeoman, was buried at St. Mary le Ghyll, Barnoldswick on 13 July 1767 but as no age was given he cannot be identified at this stage.
There is another John Barritt of Hey, married to a Mary, who has children baptised at Colne Parish Church from 1756.
John Barritt, baptised Colne P. C. on 26 September 1756, became the Reverend John Barritt of Hullet Nest (Hullet Hall).
Robert Barritt baptised Colne P. C. on 8 July 1759.
William Barritt, baptised Colne P. C. on 24 May 1761, buried on 7 June 1761
Samuel Barritt, baptised Colne P. C. on 9 May 1762.
James Barritt, baptised Colne P. C. on 20 April 1766.
Jane Barritt, baptised Colne P. C. on 25 September 1768
William Barritt, baptised Colne P. C. 23 June 1771, buried 2 July 1771.
Mary Barritt baptised on 12 August 1772, married Reverend Zachariah Taft.
From this evidence we can put together a tentative family tree as follows based very largely on the records of St. Bartholomew's at Colne in Lancashire.
Abbreviations.
SBC: St. Bartholomew's, Colne
There are two marriages of a John Barrit to a Jane in this period in Colne. The second is the most likely as the children follow on soon after the marriage and the couple both come from the Colne area
John Barot of Woodhead, Yorks & Jane Hardy of Ackronley, 30 Jan 1724
John Barret of Colne & Jane Haworth of Colne, 7 Apr 1730
There is a record of a Jane Barrit w. John of Hey, buried 11 June 1741, St. Bartholomew's, Colne. If this pertained to the John in generation 1 then the last four children would have to be from a second wife. It may be a different John and Jane.
Steven Broadley identified this marriage record and also found information from a a diary by a Mr. Halstead referring to the people mentioned:
" Betty Jackson widow of Benjamin Barritt of Fouldrig, my wife's mother, died on 26 Jan 1832 at 68 years and 4 months. She is buried on backside of Colne church in a vault with a gravestone over her with the inscription - Here lyeth the remains of Betty Barritt in the 69th year of her age, buried at the (illegible) of John and Betty Halstead, daughter of the above Betty."
A further entry indicates that she died at 5 am on Thursday 26 January 1832.
I have the following information from a copy of a will obtained from the Borthwick Institute in York. I have not yet been able to deduce whether it is relevant to my own research. It pre-dates the tree shown above. From the details given, John was a wealthy man for his time with numerous plots of land in the Foulridge and Barnoldswick area. For each plot of land he names from whom he bought it and the current tennant.
3.1 John Barrett of Woodend in the Parish of Barnoldswick and County of York. Bequeaths to his grandson, John Barrett, a list of propertied in the Barnoldswick area and one in Sutton in the Parish of Kildwick. They are subsequently to go to his son, also called John Barrett. His other grandson Robert Barrett was to have properties in Woodend, Great Hay, Hollinghurst, New Ing, Great Ing, Gate Carr, Laverrock Hill in Fouldridge. (Many of these places lie between Foulridge and Barnoldswick and were near the site of the later Leeds Liverpool Canal and later still the Colne to Skipton Railway). He also makes a bequest to William Mitchell, of Barnoldswick, yeoman, John Hargreaves of Bracewell, yeoman, John Greenwood the elder of Cockerill, Fouldridge, weaver and John Greenwood the younger of Cockerill, weaver, a messuage garden and close called the Park or Parrock in Barnoldswick.
John's wife, Grace, is to receive property at Rough Lee and Slipper Hill. Robert Barrett the grandson is named as an executor together with Thomas Green of Great Hey, Foulridge. The will was made on the 19th Feb 1731 and witnessed by John Jackson, Alverey Jackson and Samuel Greenwood.
There is also a hand-written administration which Robert Barrett of Barnoldswick Parish, Thomas Green of the Parish of Whalley, yeoman and John Jackson of the Parish of Barnoldswick, yeoman, are bound in the sum of one hundred pounds to administer the estate of John Barrett on 5 May 1734. The administration was approved on 24 July 1734.
There is also a two page hand-written inventory of the goods and chattels of John Barrett, made 30 May 1734. It does not value his land but the household and farm goods and livestock amount to £159.
There is also an administration dated 11 July 1767, under which Elisabeth Barrett of Wood-End in the Parish of Barnoldswick, widow, Richard Shaw of Colne, gentleman, and Peter Hartley of Coal Hall, Barnoldswick, yeoman, are bound in the sum of £200 to administer the will of Robert Barrett, of Wood-End, yeoman. Given the name and location he could be the Robert named as a grandson above.
3.2 John Barritt of Hey 1830. John Barritt of Hey in the Chapelry of Colne and County Palatine of Lancaster, yeoman. He mentions land at White Moor and at Wood End in the township of Salterforth in the County of York and Cragg End in the Chapelry of Colne, to his nephew, Richard Cragg and sons William and John. The mention of Richard Cragg is sufficient to identify the testator as John Barrett, 8 March 1767, son of Robert and Betty of Hey shown in Generation 3, whose sister Margaret married Matthew Cragg.
He also mentions a brother William and his daughter, Betty, the wife of John Sagar, who had children. Also a daughter Alice then under 21. His wife is mentioned but not named. The last page of the will is missing from my copy so the date is unknown. However, a further document attached shows that the executors were sworn to administer the will and it was passed on 3 May 1830.
3.3 Robert Barritt of Woodend 1812. This is the will of Robert Barritt of Woodend in the Parish of Barnoldswick, in the County of York, Hatter. I gives to his son John Barritt of Hey within Foulridge in the County of Lancaster, Farmer, a piece of land called Cragg End Estate within Foulridge, except the dwelling house, warehouse, and cottages lately built and two gardens now in the occupation of his son, William Barritt, of Cragg End. There follow a number of terms and conditions including rights of way of use of timber on the land. He then goes on to leave Long Ing, near to Salterforth Moss in the Parish of Barnoldswick to his son, John Barritt, or if he dies intestate to his children. Note that Long Ing was mentioned in the will of John Barrett of Woodend which is strong indication that Robert is descended from him. A third son, Joseph, is to have Hey Fold. It seems that Joseph has no children at this stage for if he dies without issue the property is to go to the children of the sons of John and William.
Of great significance for my own research covered here, he gives £100 to Betty Cragg, the daughter of Matthew Cragg when she reaches the age of 21 thereby linking the Craggs with the Barretts. The implication is that Bett's mother Margaret has predeceased her and we have information that she died in 1801 on my Cragg page.
We then discover that Robert's son, James Barritt, is already dead but had three illegitimate children. The will mentions the children of a Robert Barritt. A little later he mentions his nephew Robert Barritt of Fouldridge. This could be the son of his eldest brother, John. Robert then names his executors as his son John and nephew Robert. The will was made on 14 May 1812. The executors were sworn on 15 Aug 1812 to proceed and it was passed on 22 September 1812.
Also of interest at Colne is a bound collection of photocopies of family trees entitled "North East Lancashire Pedigrees originating in the office of Caleb Howarth, 1796-1879, Conveyancer of Marsden." Among the pedigrees, which have few dates, is one relating to Barretts of Foulridge and the Hudson family. Where dates are given it is not known to what they relate - birth, death or alive at that date.John Barrett (1739) married Jane ? and had a son John (1781 and in Colne in 1793). John married Mary ? and had five children. These were:
Jane Barrett married John Hudson, butcher of Colne but no children mentioned.
John Barrett who was in Hexham in 1793 and married Elizabeth.
Robert Barrett of Hey,
Midgley Barrett
Mary Barrett.Jane Barrett and John Hudson were the parents of Isabella Hudson who married my ancestor Stephen Cragg, see section below. According to the chart, John Barrett who married Elizabeth is said to have had children:
Jane, who married Isaac Lamb
John Wesley Barrett who was in Manchester in 1836;
Betty or Elizabeth who married Robert Melon
Mary who married Mr. Kirby.
Stephen Cragg married Isabella Hudson and I believe that her mother was also a Barritt or Barrett so I have two sets of ancestors from this clan. I have done little on the Hudson line but have the following. Stephen was born on 28 August 1799, the son of Matthew Cragg, a farmer, and Margaret of Salterforth. He married Isabella Hudson, the daughter of John Hudson, at Ghyll Church, Barnoldswick, on 25 August 1823.
In the registers of Colne Parish Church there is reference to an Isabella Hudson, born on 23 January 1798 and baptised on 8 April 1798, the daughter of John, a butcher, and Jane Hudson of Reedymoor.Records in the area that seem to relate to this family are shown below and as indicated later there is information in Colne Library from the work of the solicitor/conveyancer Caleb Haworth on this family; there are few clear dates but it mentions John Hudson the butcher marrying Jane Barrett. The marriage was presumably 1793 or earlier from the baptism records below but it did not take place at Colne.
Mary Hudson daughter of John Hudson, a butcher and Jane, born 20 May 1793 and baptised 17 August 1794 of Pinfold. (In Great Marsden)
John Hudson son of John Hudson, a butcher and Jane, born 4 November 1795, and baptised on 31 January 1796 of Wanless water.
Isabella Hudson daughter of John Hudson, a butcher and Jane, born 23 January 1798 and baptised on 8 April 1798 of Reedy moor.
Betty dau. of John Hudson of Foulridge aged 1 year buried on 1 June 1817
Ann Hudson daughter of John Hudson, butcher of Barnoldswick and Jane Barrett, born 30 November 1807 and baptised 27 March 1808.
Various spellings according to the fancy of the parish clerk. Most of these records are from Colne St. Bartholomews but searches of the records of Thornton in Craven and Ghyll Church in Barnoldswick are required.

It was published on A4 paper in portrait format and there was insufficient room to include the names of the witnesses. For the purposes of this page the order of the columns has been slightly altered to a more traditional text format but the entries remain in alphabetical order of Christian name, ignoring the variants in the surname spelling.
