Thornber Baptisms

Houghton Chapel was formerly a chapel of ease for Gisburn St. Mary, but is now St. Bartholomew's. Its registers are indexed in the IGI as Houghton by Settle under the County of Yorkshire.  The following baptism entries are taken from my transcript of the register and are presented in alphabetical order of the child's name. The order of items in each entry is as follows: Surname, Christian name, birth date where given, sex and number, father's Christian name, father's occupation, mother's name and maiden name, abode and date of baptism. Variations from the register shown in the bishops' transcripts are shown in square brackets. Entries after 1852 have not been checked against the bishops' transcripts.

Footnotes

1. Elizabeth, wife of Paul, was buried on the same day at their daughter was baptised,16 March 1785.

2.    The Bishops' Transcript has William as the father's name.  However, I believe that Paul as given in the register, is the correct name.  Paul Thornber married Betty (Elizabeth) Harrison on 17 November 1777 at Gisburn.  They had children baptised at Houghton Chapel in 1778, 1781 and 1785 and at Long Preston in 1780 and 1783.

Footnote

The burial entries in this period were interspersed with the baptisms and Isabella Holden's name was entered in the appropriate column for the mother's name. However, from the administration of Thomas Thornber's estate and baptism records in this transcript, Isabella (nee Holden) is known to be the wife of Thomas Thornber.
