The major parishes in the former county of Yorkshire where Thornber records are found are Slaidburn, Waddington, and Gisburn. Their registers are now at the LCRO in Preston. In this section I gather the records from some of the parishes with fewer numbers of entries for the family. The registers for Mitton, Barnoldswick, Bracewel and Houghton Chapel are now kept at the Lancashire County Record Office in Preston while those for the Craven area are at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton.

1.       Addingham

There is a transcript at the North Yorkshire County Record office going from 1612 to 1812.

John Thornber married Anne Smith on 8 November 1713.

Also of interest is the following baptism record:

Thos. son of John Holmes, husbandman, son of John Holmes, butcher, by Margaret daughter of Henry Winterburn of Hazlewood, farmer, and Sarah, daughter of John Wilkinson of Howgill near Sedbergh by Sarah, daughter of John Thornborough of Orton in Westmoreland, farmer, born on 28 January adn baptised 24 April 1796.

A William Thornber was witness to a marriage in 1777,

2.    Arncliffe (1663 to 1812) and Rylestone (1559 to 1812)

Arncliffe including Hubberholme and Halton Gill (1663 to 1812) has been transcribed by the North Yorkshire County Record Office but there are no Thornber records in this period.  Similarly a transcript exists for Rylestone from 1559 to 1812 but has no Thornber records. However there is an IGI record that need investigating:

Thomas Thornber & Alice Nicholson, 14 Jun 1656, Rylstone
William Thornber & Ann Broadley, 25 Dec 1835, Rylstone

3.   Barnoldswick, St Mary Le Ghyll: Baptisms & Burials, 1766 to 1812

Baptisms from 1776 to 1812 and marriages from 1748 to 1812 are not in the IGI.  These gaps have been filled by a manual inspection of the registers at the Lancashire County Record Office.  There are no Thornber burials in this period and the baptism records relate mainly to two families.

There is a monumental inscription in the churchyard for Catherine of Whit Holme indicating birth on 15 April 1781, death on 22 April 1852. There is probably a mistake on the birth date. A Catherine daughter of William Thornber was buried 23 August 1781 so this Catherine was probably the next daughter of William and born after August 1781.

7.    Bracewell St. Michael

Bracewell has registers going back to 1587 and there are bishops' transcripts from 1600.  The records have been indexed by the IGI only from 1731 to 1836.  Bracewell registers are not as voluminous as those for nearby Gisburn and there are surprisingly few Thornber records.  I have abstracted Thornber records from the original registers as follows: Baptisms from 1758 to 1945; Marriages from 1754 to 1945, and Burials from 1760 to 1794 during which period there were no Thornber entries). In addition I have examined the BTs that survive from 1600 to 1836. I am grateful to Mrs. Mary Cole for some earlier baptism entries which relate to the tree shown in a Thornber family from Gisburn.  These are shown with MC in brackets.

14.    Giggleswick Registers, 1558-1837

The Yorkshire Parish Register Society has published two volumes of Registers covering the period up to 1769.  The North Yorkshire County Record Office has its own transcript covering the entire period from 1558 to 1837.  The notes below were taken from both sources.  Some dates from the latter source for the period 1 January to 24 March, prior to the change from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar, have been rendered in double date form such as 1645/6.

I have examined on microfilm at Northallerton the baptisms, marriages & burials from 1837 to end 1871.

John Thornber and Mary Preston, both of this parish, by licence, itpo: William Ellison and Ellen Thornber, on 18 July 1829.

(This latter entry reveals a mystery.  The conveyancer Caleb Howarth, who made the will of Ann (Mount) Thornber refers to her son John Thornber of Settle, Colne and Barnoldswick, who married first Mary Ellison on 18 July 1829.  She died in December 1831, but the couple had two children, William, born 9 January 1830 and Mary Ann, born 5 June 1831.  These dates fit the baptisms shown above.  Moreover, there is a burial reported below for Mary Ellison Thornber wife of John, aged 21, died 20 December 1831. As the marriage as by licence it was possible to obtain a copy from the Borthwick Institute. It shows that on 11 July 1829, John Thornber of Settle in the parish of Giggleswick, a tailor, a bachelor or age 21 and upwards, obtained a licence to marry Mary Preston of Stackhouse in the said parish, a minor of the age of nineteen years and upwards, and that the consent of her father Robert Preston had been obtained. Could it be that Mary's full name was Mary Ellison Preston?

23.     Marton in Craven

At the North Yorkshire County Record Office there is a typed transcript. Volume 1, goes from 1538 to 1637 and has no Thornber records. There is a handwritten transcript from 1637 to 1728 which has no Thornber entries.. The microfilm of the registers has been examined for the following periods in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although Marton is only a few miles from Gisburn, there are remarkably few records for Thornber families.

Printed transcripts in several volumes at the North Yorkshire County Record Office cover the period from 1592 to 1680 (Vol. 1) and from 1745 to 1812 (Vol. 2). Still to check are the unindexed transcripts that go from 1813 to the late 19th century and to examine why there is gap between 1680 and 1745.

Baptisms:

30.    Thornton in Craven

No transcript exists for Thornton in Craven at the moment.  I have looked at the microfilm for the following periods and found no Thornber records.  This is perhaps surprising as there are many Thornber records in the adjacent parish of Gisburn.

Baptisms from 1787 to 1852
Marriages from 1813 to 1861
Burials from 1786 to 1852

The following records were noted by my correspondent David Baxter from a later period

1911 Feb 05 baptism of Mary Hannah Thornber, daughter of Wm. & Hannah, bookkeeper of 18 Cross Street, Earby, born 1 January 1911.

1886 January 02, Albert Edward Thornber, bachelor, weaver of Burnley and son of John Thornber, weaver, married Isabella Waddington, witnesses were William Waddington, Eliza X Waddington.

32. Lay Subsidy for the Wapentake of Staincliffe: October 1545.

From 'Early Tudor Craven: Subsidies and Assessments 1510-1547' edited by R.W. Hoyle (1987)
Yorkshire Archaeological Society, Record Series 145

The following entries were found of relevance to the Thornber family. Given that few parish registers go back to 1538, the date of their introduction, because of the decay of the paper registers used between 1538 and about 1600, the Lay Subsidy Rolls give an extra glimpse into Tudor England. The areas covered in the Wapentake of Staincliffe are, Basshall, Carleton, Bradforth, Easington and Waddington. It is of interest that the two Thornber entries include a Giles, a Christian name characteristic of the Thornbers of Slaidburn and Waddington for the next three hundred years.

Basshall: Giles Thornber £3-3s.

Bradforth (now Bradford near Waddington) Robert Thornber, 20s-2d.
